Major Research and Activities

CIDR houses world-class Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) and Animal Biosafety Level-3 (ABSL-3) facilities, certified by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. These specialized containment laboratories enable safe research on airborne and high-risk pathogens, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV, Hepatitis viruses, Japanese Encephalitis virus, influenza viruses, and other emerging infectious agents. Designed in accordance with international CDC and WHO biosafety standards, the facilities feature advanced engineering controls, negative-pressure environments, unidirectional airflow systems, and continuous monitoring through a dedicated Building Management System.

The Center supports a vibrant research ecosystem led by distinguished investigators and fellows working across microbiology, immunology, virology, molecular biology, genomics, bioengineering, and translational medicine. Equipped with advanced instrumentation, high-containment laboratory spaces, and specialized animal research facilities, CIDR enables both fundamental and applied research, including studies on pathogen biology, immune responses, vaccine efficacy, drug discovery, and disease transmission.

Through collaborative research, training, and state-of-the-art infrastructure, CIDR serves as a national resource for infectious disease research, strengthening India’s preparedness against existing and emerging infectious disease threats while contributing to global health solutions.
